Zabuza’s mother didn’t know who his father was, and didn’t care much for that matter. She had her current boyfriend(s) to worry about, and getting a hit was usually more important then getting her son food.

Zabuza grew up on the streets basically. He was the kid at school that bullied the nerds into doing his homework, if he bothered to show up more then two or three times a week. He was in a gang before he was twelve, and quit school before 16. Most of his new friends barely even went to school, and most thought that “High School” was a place where you go to learn how to get high. (Which they already knew, so there was no point in going in their eyes.) He held the nickname “fang” there, since he had a habit of filing his teeth to look pointy.

For several years, everything went fine, or as fine as things can go when you’re living in a ghetto. Surrounded by violence, killing, drugs, and abuse, it was a surprise even to Zabuza when he found he had a heart after all, and it was telling him to save a young child abandoned in the snow. He carried the kid, what he thought was a girl at the time, to the nearest hospital. Checked on him, at it turned out, every now and then. He even mugged a few guys in the alleys to pay for the expenses. He wasn’t sure why he did any of those things, but it made him feel significant to know that he was needed. Of course he couldn’t hide this sort of thing from his boys for long, so when the kid was starting to look like they would make it through okay, he up and left without so much as a goodbye.

Years after that, the gang leader was arrested for murder. Being the gracious loser he was, he tried to pin the crime on just about everyone else. Zabuza ended up spending 18 months in jail himself, thought that wasn’t as bad as what some of his buddies got. For his parole he needed a job. Not many places hire a man who never finished high school, but Konoha Mart made the exception. He just very recently started working there.

No matter what time of day, Zabuza always has 5 o’clock shadow. His arms and legs are covered in old scars; there are even a few on his face. His hair is dark and short. He’s pretty well built and muscular, with a few old tattoos on his upper arms. He rides a motorcycle. He also owns a handgun, which he stashes under his bed. It’s fully loaded, even though he neither has the license to own it nor operate it. He’s killed people with it before during his time with the gang.
